Well how great is that I submitted a ticket to make micfo aware of the problem and this was the responce

Greetings Michael,

We dont support Free server issues.
Thanks for your patience.

So how am i supposed to sort the problem... it is your server that has been hacked I would have hoped you would take being hacked a bit more seriously.

Wait, this is -free-, right? You're not paying anything for it? If some tramp offers to look after your car free of charge, I wouldn't expect great results from that, either. If you want service, and support, and guarantees, pay money. You get what you paid for, and you paid for nothing.

The reason for offering a free service would be to tempt people into taking out the paid service. How does doing nothing about THEIR servers being hacked make me want to pay for anything. Fair enough they arn't going to support any problems Im having seting up my website but I think they should be diong something to keep even their free server secure....

I don't see why, people who solely rely on free hosting are too cheap to let good service encourage them to pay $5 a month ('though that's probably not what you'd get from Micfo anyway...). I suppose there'd be an outcry if Micfo suddenly withdrew the free server, too?

Not at all I understand they are hosting my site free of charge and thats great but what im trting to get at is how does not being bothered about one of your servers being hacked look to potentialy PAYING customers ...... I have now moved my site elsewhere and yes still for free.

And the reason I use a free service is because I dont use my site for any sort of profit making it's just a personal site for friends and family to view but I dont like the thought of my mum going to look at my site and find she is looking at some hackers possibly abusive site. If my site was being used for profit then I would of course pay for a better quality of service..

Hack Issue

Greetings,

First of all, not all accounts are hacked, but quite a few, and from the looks of it, it was done by one person managing to trick one tech to setup the free account with shell account which in turn, he exploited the server by the kernel security hole in the server. However, it happened just few days after the information of the security exploit was released to the public and I didn't have a chance to update the server with it, since I was busy updating the main production servers first, and this server is last in line.

The account in question have been terminated and removed and all other accounts that managed to get shell got terminated and removed as well. So for the rest of the people who have accounts, they have to re-upload their files to replace those index pages to have it back to normal. Everything else is pretty much secure, since he targeted the pure-ftpd and hijacked it to make those changes on the server.

If you want that assurance, pay. Mine's personal, non-profit, and I pay. It's a service - someone, somewhere is paying to host your site. If you want it to be done properly, you make sure they're being reimbursed.

I guess that you have an issue with people who use free hosted servers, since you have made the same comment about paying for good service several times in this thread.

Your comment reminds me of the people that get upset on the IPB boards that someone out there is using a nulled version of IPB.

I am happy with the service I have on this site. I think Elik is doing a great job allowing people to use this host for free.
