What about Back-ups?

So, I sent in a ticket requesting a restoration of a backup of some files that had been accidentally deleted. I was told that micfo does not do backups of the servers anymore. I had previously stopped doing regular backups to save resources on the servers as I was told that regular backups are done. Now, apparently this is not the case?

I suppose it comes under as a value added feature from Micfo but still there has to be communication in that regard from their side.

I am going to lodge a ticket enquiring about this one, and I suggest that you all do the same.

When they moved my sites, they managed to mess up one of the databases. The day after, when I asked them to migrate the database correctly, they informed me they couldn't do it, it had already been deleted from the previous server.

The only backup they had of my database was of Aug 31, two months earlier! I had no other choice but to tell them to use this one.

Another lesson is this webhost has false advertising and sometimes also lies to their customers.

Reply from support

I have had this reply to my ticket from Jason A., Technical Department:

Regular server backups
Hello,

We do have backup on the server. Some time due to the backup partition full on the server we need to remove the weekly backups only of 3-4 accounts only. But we make sure to have the backup of those accounts in dailly backup atleast before removing any.
But the thing is that we do configure the backup of all the acccount on the server. Sometime we even have the backups of the accounts that are aleady deleted from the server. So you not need to worry.
According to Jason, therefore server backups are still being made. This seems to contradict Bubba's experience. I do not know what to make of it.

I've been taking responsibility for my own data for quite a well now. I learned a couple of years ago that it is far simpler to use Cpanel for backups that can be quickly restored from your local PC, than it is to submit a ticket and wait for tech support to restore your site. Of course-my site isn't huge.

I suppose for larger sites -downloading daily backups could cause your bandwidth usage to skyrocket. But for those of you with smaller sites...it's a quick and simple process that could save you significant headaches down the line.

I know when sarah crashed back in 2005 (if I remember the year and server properly) the only backup they could provide was 2 weeks old. Um - so from my experience I believe what Bubba is saying to be the norm.

I guess Micfo's backup policy has not changed, but that it has always been applied irregularly. As Sue says, having your own backup is certainly the safest.

My most recent response

Hello,
I apologise for that. The backup configuration settings are almost completed on the new server. The backups should be started soon on the server.
Thanks for your patience ..

So, it would appear that in the migration and setup of the new VIP accounts, they have not been doing backups as of yet. So, they WILL be doing backups, they just don't as of yet.

and I have always done regular backups. One of the admins on our site has it setup so his computer regularly connects to the server and does an SQL and file backup. So we have backups every three days dating back months. In this scenario though, it was our new account that we had not started doing backups of yet.

Regardless of what any policy says you should always do backups after anything major is done that you wouldn't want to have to redo

I do backups once a month, I keep current files located in local folders and if I do a LOT of work I may make additional backups.

Like the old saying goes it's better to be safe than sorry!

TWDesigns, it is a bit difficult if you have a dynamic site that is changing by the minute - ie sales coming in, customers registering and your database to save is over 90 mb. For my static sites, yes it is easy.

Lightbulb Set up already

Greetings ,

Dont worry guys. It has been already setup 2 days ago . Just purchase order and setup of new backup server took some time. Now VIP servers will never face load issue due to backup running , as it's on remote backup server now .
